A love story based on writer Michael Ausiello's book about his own relationship, this film looks like a tearjerker that avoids romance genre clichés and even revels in some of them. What does one do when their partner is diagnosed with a terminal illness? As the trailer shows, they savor every moment that they possibly can; sometimes through tears, sometimes through humor and sometimes through both. Director Michael Showalter, who brought us the poignant The Big Sick, appears to be specializing in features dealing with unconventional and often tragic relationship twists. Parsons has always been a talent to be reckoned with, showing off his chops to the world in "The Big Bang Theory" and then going on to The Normal Heart and Hidden Figures, among other films. He is giving a completely different kind of performance in Spoiler Alert, with humor and desperation in equal measure. Aldridge seems to be having a moment with this film and the upcoming Knock at the Cabin, and Spoiler Alert is yet another chance for him to shine in a complex role. We do not get enough humane, moving tales like this one nowadays and I am interested in seeing this story unfold and touch as many hearts as possible.
